I took an awesome trip to Maui from February 16-22, 1998
Pearl Jam was opening their 1998 tour there on Feb. 20 & 21,
and with about 3 weeks left before the shows, my friend Jason Cline
invited me to meet him and some friends of his out there for the shows.
I was by myself for the first 3 days, then met up with them on the 19th
The result was one of the best times of my life, and this page is dedicated to it...

I arrrived in Maui in the afternoon, having flown from Chicago-Midway through Phoenix.
First thing was to get my rental car and head for my 'hotel.'  I had reserved an economy car,
but once I got to the rental car lot, I decided to upgrade to a 4x4 (a Subaru).
So I got that, then headed to my hotel in Kahului, which was about 5 minutes from the airport.
But it took a while to find, as it was in the midst of being torn down.
I went to the hotel next to it to see what was up, and they said they were
accomodating all the reservations of that hotel, so I was ok.
I'm rambling too much.  Let's get on with the pictures...

I also visited the venue where Pearl Jam would be playing on the 20th & 21st.
It was actually right around the corner from my hotel, as can be seen below:

Got up way early to drive up to the peak of the 10,023-foot tall volcano,
Haleakala, to see the sunrise...

In the afternoon, I decided to try and upgrade my rental car to a Jeep Wrangler,
since I'd seen many of them on the island.  Unfortunately, they were all out, but
fortunately, I was able to get a Mustang convertible!:

In the background of that second picture above,
you can see the ruins of the hotel I was supposed to stay in...

Next, I stopped off at Ho'okipa Beach, where there is world-class surfing & wind-surfing.
It was about 15 minutes east of my hotel, and on the way to my afternoon destination...

For the afternoon, I took a trip around the base of Haleakala to the Seven Pools.
It was quite a drive, with very narrow & curvy roads that had tall drop-offs.
The drive there took about 2 and a half hours,
but I stopped along the way to take pics and videotape.
The Seven Pools were pretty dried up though...

Slept in a little bit after driving all day yesterday.  Drove to Kihei and ate at Denny's.
Then I went to the beach for a few hours...  here's the view from the beach there:

While in Kihei, I signed up for a snorkeling voyage to Molokini Crater the next morning.

This afternoon, I went back to Ho'okipa Beach to watch the windsurfers:

At this point, I don't remember what I did this night.
I may have to go re-watch my video and see what I did :)

Got up early to go on my snorkeling voyage that left from Maalaea Harbor.
While waiting in line, I saw someone walk by that had a shirt with this symbol on it:
5htarget.gif (1891 bytes)
I knew it had to be someone from the Pearl Jam web site Five Horizons,
so I went up and introduced myself, and sure enough, it was Jean from 5h!
She and her husband Tony were going on a snorkeling trip on a different boat.
So anyway, my boat left the harbor (with me on it), and our trip began.
Here are some pics:

It took about an hour to get to Molokini Crater, where we
circled it once, then dropped anchor and went snorkeling for about a half hour.

Af ter the snorkeling trip, I had to check out of my hotel
since I would be staying with Jason & friends the rest of the week.
So I hung out at Ho'okipa Beach and also went to the mall and saw Titanic.
Later that night I went to meet Jason, Doug, and Pat at the airport...

Friday, February 20, 1998

We stayed at a nice place in Lahaina, a small, touristy town. Most of Friday morning
we walked around Lahaina going to the shops and grabbing some lunch.

Of course, this was the night of the first Pearl Jam show.

Saturday morning, we hung out in Lahaina some more.
We got lucky and ran into Mike McCready
(guitarist for Pearl Jam) and I got my picture taken with him:

Time to go home :(   The guys were nice enough to let me sleep in a bed
while they played cards all night, since I had to travel all Sunday
and go straight to work from the airport at 7am Monday morning.
We said our goodbyes and I flew from Maui to Honolulu to Phoenix and
ended up in Chicago (luckily).  The 3am flight from Phoenix was hell,
but it was all worth it.  I'd love for another PJ opportunity like that one...
