Ed before Hail, Hail: "We're just getting warmed up"
Ed before Faithfull: "All right, we're just getting warmed up. Get comfortable."
Ed before Wishlist: "Ok, we're about to
play this number, and it's not a bad little number. But before we do, a public
service announcement here. And you guys in the back don't need to worry - you can
just relax. But right up, uh, in front here is just a little bit of a crush and
they're having a problem with the barricade. You hearing me alright on this?
(Ed skillfully catches a shirt thrown on stage) Ok, now reward that spectacular
catch with two steps backright in the middle please: 1,2 - you didn't do it. On the
count of three: 1,2,3 - 1,2. Ok, now just stay there for like, a few minutes.
Ok, yeah, I know what'll keep 'em... Ok, we're gonna play a nice quiet song instead
of the... Ok, I got an idea... (long pause)
Apparently they've set up the Mariah Carey barricade. (note: Mariah was performing in
Honolulu the following night) So just hang out and be mellow, really, they need you
to do it or else it's problems all night and someone's going to get hurt - don't want
that. This doesn't happen enough. I think the last time we were here, what,
four years ago at the high school, right? So that means you might have like
been through college since then, so congratulations on graduating. Of course, you
also might have become like, addicted to crack and, you know, been to prison already and
now you're out... detox... congratulations on that too. I see a number of
stoned people - I was counting them before: 1,2... Smoke it if you got it, if
you don't got it, go surfing."
Ed at the end of Wishlist: "I wish I was a forty foot wave, breaking off the North Shore. I wish, I wish, I wish, I wish - I couldn't ask for more."
Ed before Even Flow: "Fuck it! Let's go!"

Ed between Jeremy & Given to Fly: "Ok, first night things happen. It's nice to be your virgin. That wasn't the best version of that last song, but this, I promise this one's going to be great. It's Given to Fly."
Ed after Stone thanks Mudhoney for opening: "And
we just asked them if we could be part of their four-way marriage to get it up to
eight. Any other men who wanna be out there in this legal, same-sex-marriage state -
anybody else wanna be married to us? (a few cheers) Come on! Come on,
boys, you get to fuck me... (pauses) Or, or then again, I get to fuck
you..."
Stone: "On that note..." (plays intro to Black)
Ed before Do the Evolution: "You know what I'm thinking? I just wanted tonight to be perfect - I've been waiting, oh, for a long, long, long time. I just wanted it to be perfect. It wasn't half-bad. You guys were great. You guys deserve a hand for coming up, and that's just for you. We're all around the ocean, the ocean's surrounding us, we came from the ocean. It's all about evolution, baby."
Ed holding up a banner that says "Save Ma'alaea" before Smile: "All right, good work. You got a banner up on a stage, a band held it out in front of a bunch of people, the bunch of people agreed. Good work! Now don't stop there - keep going, you know. I wish I had better things to say about it, you could, uh (say) - it was easier to make changes. The fact is, it's not. I don't think it is. But I don't think... what are you gonna do? Give up hope? So, you know, prove for once. I don't know. Start some petitions. Burn some bulldozers. Do something. And tell'em I told ya. And then 'Smile' when you do it."
Note: I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the above quotes, but I
think I got them mostly right...
plus I removed Ed's numerous 'uh's to make them more readable :)
Also, don't bother asking me for a tape of this first night - my copy was so crappy
that I didn't even bother with it the second night... more screaming and whistling
than music :(
